Eurasian Economic Community Leaders Talk Integration in Moscow

19.03.2012 08:02 / Interfax

The Eurasian Economic Community Council summit will convene in Moscow on Monday.

According to the Kremlin press office, the summit will be attended by leaders of the Eurasian Community countries (Russia, Belorussia, Kazakhstan, Kirgyzia and Tajikistan), as well as monitoring states (Armenia, Moldova and Ukraine).

The press release emphasizes the role of the upcoming summit in the process of further Eurasian economic integration. The leaders are expected to arrive at decisions that will define the scope of future regional integration processes.

The Eurasian Economic Community summit will draft the basic principles of a treaty to transform the Eurasian Economic Community into a new integration hub. This was decided at the previous Eurasian Economic Community summit in Moscow on 19 December 2011.

Apart from this key topic, the summit will work on the roadmap of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC). This super-state body, based on the best international practice, is active since 1 February 2012. The EEC Board is chaired by Viktor Khristenko (Russia).

Other important integration aspects include the unification of passport and visa control in the Customs Union, aimed at providing freedom of travel for the residents of the three countries.

The upcoming Moscow summit will create a new impulse for continuing Eurasian integration.
