Prime Minister Formulated 3 Major Directions of Moscow Transport Hub Development

19.09.2012 14:47 / Interfax

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev formulated priority directions in developing a Moscow transportation hub.

“First, we talk about developing public transport. It needs to be comfortable and modern – both a tube and surface transport, including city and suburban buses and express streetcars,” Medvedev said at the meeting on a Moscow transportation hub development.

The second priority, according to him, is to build a network of transport interchange hubs: 107 plane hubs and 23 multi-level transport interchange hubs are planned to be constructed by 2016.

“The third. According to experts, railways have a great potential that today is inefficiently used: a share of railway transportation in the city is only 10%,” Medvedev said.

He also added that a Moscow transport hub has 50% of all suburban transportations conducted by the Russian Railways.

Prime Minister also added that he is looking forward to receiving some detailed suggestions on this issue.

Moreover, as Medvedev said, there is a need for complex modernization of a present infrastructure, as well as reconstruction and building of a whole network of roads - first of all, of so called “arterial roads”. This will need to synchronize the construction process in the capital and its region, as he noted.

“Moscow remains to be a global megacity and will continue its development, that’s why it should become one of the largest international air hubs that will host up to 120 million passengers annually in future; and here we need some coordinated policy on enhancing competitive capacities of Moscow region’s airports – roads, leading to airports and other objects of transport infrastructure,” Medvedev said.

He reminded on creation of the Coordination Council on Transport Development in Moscow and Moscow Region in last February and execution of the program of Moscow region’s transport complex development by 2020. All these measures are here to improve transportation in the region.
