Capital Authorities Evaluate Wi-Fi Launch in Moscow Tube in Several Billion RUR

20.09.2012 15:18 / Interfax

Modernization of an underground cable network, its corporate network and Wi-Fi access in a tube will cost a provider of this project several billion rubles, Artem Yermolaev, Head of the Moscow IT Department, said to journalists in Moscow.

“Previously, with a help of MTS, we tried to figure out whether underground passengers need Wi-Fi in a tube, interviewing them on a Moscow tube’s belt line (all three major providers had their separate experiment zones in other underground lines – INTERFAX), Yermolaev said. “This experiment has shown, there is a need for Wi-Fi, and right now we’re working out a model of providing an access to Internet throughout the tube.”

Right now, according to Yermolaev, a contest on choosing a contractor is being prepared. Its aim is to organize a Wi-Fi access in subway coaches, modernize a cable network and a subway’s corporate network. The contest preparation is at the level of working out a technical task.

Yermolaev also reported that a winner will get a discount on underground cable laying. Meanwhile, he noted that the main task is to provide a non-discriminatory access of other operators to future infrastructure. It means, their subscribers will be able to use the web. Yermolaev believes, Moscow Metro may become a guarantor of a non-discriminatory access to Internet.
