Moscow Rail May Connect Three Airports

21.02.2012 08:16 / Interfax

A railways network is likely to connect the three major Moscow airports (Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo) within 3-4 years; one will be able to commute between them using a universal pass, Izvestia reported on Tuesday.

“A recently developed project envisions the construction of additional stations on Airexpress lines, where passengers will have an opportunity to change for the Moscow Small Ring railway. These transfer stations are expected to be also integrated with the Moscow Metro,” the newspaper says.

JSC Russian Railways (RTS: RZHD) informed that the final decision on this project will be made no earlier than 2015, when the Small Ring reconstruction by JSC Moscow Ring Railway (MRR), owned by the Government of Moscow and Russian Railways, is over.

According to the title, construction, infrastructure redevelopment and transfer station work will begin in 2H 2012, according to the adopted business plan.

“By end-2014, passenger transit between 12 main stations is planned to be launched. Starting from 2016, the MMR plans to carry over 250 mn passengers annually. This will require 200 electric trains working 24 hours a day with an interval of up to 5 minutes in the rush hour,” according to Izvestia.

The newspaper specifies that some transfer stations on the Small Ring will be constructed by the Railway Station Directorate (an affiliate of Russian Railways), others – by the Department for Major Repairs of the city of Moscow. The overall project is coordinated by the Moscow Department of Transport.

Moreover, as the newspaper informs, the operator for passenger transits on the Moscow Ring Railway has not been named as yet.

“The MRR management believes that the Small Ring reconstruction and development project will allow to significantly reduce traffic in the capital”, according to Izvestia.
